My Dearest Mother and Father

by Rebecca Reeves

“My Dearest Mother and Father” draws from the Victorian superstition of the recently deceased’s spirit becoming trapped inside a mirror. At the time of death, they would be cloaked in black cloth to avoid this from occurring.  Reeves refers to the mirrors in her work as portals – a instrument to communicate with her ancestors.  The feminine and masculine portals represent her mother and recently deceased father.  The double antique frame reminds Reeves of her parent’s commitment to each other and the eternal love they share.  A portrait of family, love and loss.
